This is a triptych painting consisting of three 20" x 16" substrates with a total height and width of 20" x 48" not including the frames. It started as a plein air painting done on site at Garrapata State Park below Highway 1 between Carmel and Big Sur. I have done several plein air paintings at this location at different times of the year and under different weather conditions. This is one of my favorite locations during late spring. I painted the scene just above the beach level on a stairway that had been washed away about 10 feet above the beach.
I started the studio painting process by creating a study of this triptych on three 10" x 8" linen panels using one of my original plein air paintings as a guide before completing this larger triptych. These studies were completed to see if I was satisfied with my selection before moving on. The studies were completed in a few hours. I also completed this large triptych using a brush to better capture the four primary locations: ocean, beach , bluffs and coastal mountains.
